    Day 2: Arrive Yangon

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your English speaking guide and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free at leisure for you to relax after your journey.

    Day 3: Yangon (B, L)

Formerly known as Rangoon, Yangon’s impressive colonial and spiritual heritage makes it one of the most fascinating cities in South East Asia. After breakfast, we head out for a tour of the city featuring the faded colonial architecture of the old post office, Sule Paya in the middle of the down town district, the Strand Hotel and Mahabandoola Garden including the Independence Monument along the way. Next we visit Little India and Chinatown, to see the colourful cacophony of restaurants, temples and markets in both.

After lunch in local restaurant, we move on to Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda, a lively place of worship with a 70-meter long reclining Buddha as its centre piece. Following afternoon tea in a local tea house and a visit to Kandawgyi Park, we continue to Shwedagon Pagoda, a massive complex with 65 stupas providing breath-taking views of the golden stupa and the city skyline from this vantage point.

From here we return to the hotel where there will be free time for the rest of the evening.

    Day 4: Yangon – Bagan (B, L)

After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the airport for the flight to Bagan. Located on the banks Irrawaddy River, Bagan was the capital of Burma from 11th to 13th Centuries and is rich in history and architecture. On arrival, our journey begins with a visit to the Shwezigon Pagoda followed by a visit to the cave temple of Wetkyi-In Gubyaukgyi with its exquisite Jataka mural paintings and the elegant Htilominlo Temple noted for its fine plaster carvings and glazed sandstone decorations.

After lunch we visit a traditional lacquer ware workshop where you can observe the production of one of Myanmar’s best-known handicrafts. Continue to Ananda Temple, one of Bagan’s most beautiful. We conclude the day with a ride by horse and cart, passing Thatbyinnyu, the highest temple in Bagan, the massive Dhammayangyi Temple and Sulamani Temple where we’ll enjoy unforgettable views at sunset over the plains.

    Day 5: Bagan – Kyauk Gu U Min (B, L)

This morning, there is the option of a balloon ride over the plains of Bagan with fabulous views as the sun rises over the stupas and Irrawaddy River. With prices from £240, please enquire if you would like to include this activity on your tour.

After breakfast we visit the colourful Nyaung Oo Market where villagers gather every day to buy and sell their produce and other goods. From here we take a bicycle ride to Thagyar Pone Temple to take in the spectacular views over the surrounding plains.

Following lunch, we transfer to the Bagan boat jetty and board our Irrawaddy River cruise toward Kyauk Gu U Min. As we sail up the Irrawaddy, relax and enjoy the fabulous scenes of life on the water: fishermen, local ferry boats, riverside villages and views of the Bagan temples. En-route, we stop at one of the typical riverside villages for a walking tour. We continue by boat to Kyauk Gu U Min and take the short walk to the temple.  Built against the side of cliff, the main temple hall is inside a cave which legend claims was built for the locals to hide from invading Mongols in the 13th century.

Form here return by riverboat to Bagan where there will be free time for the rest of the day.

    Day 6: Bagan – Mandalay – Ava – Amarapura – Inwa – Sagaing (B, L)

After breakfast, transfer to airport and take a flight to Mandalay. Explore the former capitals of Amarapura, Ava and Sagaing. We begin by driving to Amarapura, where you’ll witness the alms collection at Mahagandayon monastery, where over one-thousand monks gather to collect their daily meal from the local Buddhists.

Following this beautiful spectacle, continue to Ava, the capital from 14th to 18th centuries and travel by horse and carriage through the area stopping to visit the old wooden Bagaya Monastery and the remains of the Royal Palace and Fort.

After lunch at the local restaurant, we sail across the Irrawaddy River to Sagaing. Covered with 600 pagodas and monasteries, Sagaing Hill is widely regarded as the religious centre of Burma. It is home to 3,000 monks and 100 meditation centres. After viewing the pagodas and visiting a local nunnery, we return to Mandalay via Amarapura. Along the way we visit the 200 year old U Bein Bridge and a traditional silk weaving workshop. Once back in Mandalay, we return to the hotel where the rest of the day will be free at leisure.

    Day 7: Mandalay – Mingun – Mandalay (B, L)

After breakfast, our sightseeing tour begins with a visit to Mahamuni Pagoda. This pagoda is home to one of the country’s most revered Buddha images which, over the years, have been covered with gold leaf giving it an almost ‘lumpy’ texture. We also visit local craftsman to observe the production of traditional wood carvings, kalaga tapestries, and gold-leaf wares. From here we board a river boat cruise to Mingun where we visit the Mingun Pahtodawqyi.  This huge brick structure was left unfinished after an astrologer predicted the King’s would die should the temple be completed.  We move on to the white Hsinbyume Pagoda and view the Mingun Bell which weighs 90 tons and is considered the world’s largest un-cracked ringing bell.

Following lunch on board the river boat, we continue to the Kuthodaw Pagoda, whose 729 marble stone slabs of Buddhist scriptures have earned it the title ‘World’s Biggest Book’. Next we take in the Shwenandaw Monastery, the only remaining building from the 19th century Royal Palace and visit Kyauk Taw Gyi Paya. We complete the day by heading to the top of Mandalay Hill to take in the magnificent views of sun set over the city and Irrawaddy River.
