    Day 4: Siem Reap (B, L)

After breakfast we journey out to the ancient city of Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire. Entering through the ancient South Gate, we pass carved Elephants, four giant faces and 54 gods and demons holding the sacred Naga snake. From here, continue to Bayon Temple at the exact centre of the city. We also visit The Terrace of Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King.

A special lunch will be served at Sala Bai, a school training young Cambodians in the principles of hospitality. There will be an opportunity to meet with the local students who will also give you a brief tour of the school after your meal.

This afternoon we take a Tuk Tuk ride to the world famous Angkor Wat, built during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. Inside the temple, the walls are covered with stone carvings and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology and the wars Suryavarman II fought during his reign. On the way back to Siem Reap, we will catch the beautiful evening light from Pre Rup, a pyramidal temple surrounded by rice fields.

    Free time in the evening.

    Day 5: Siem Reap – Beng Mealea – Banteay Srey (B, L)

This morning travel off the main tourist track to Beng Mealea. Following a short walk through the dense jungle we arrive at the completely overgrown temple. Undiscovered for centuries, Beng Mealea has only recently been made accessible and remains un-restored. It is one of the very few temples where you can climb through, giving a very ‘Indiana Jones’ feel to the experience!

After a lunch box ‘picnic’ amid the temple grounds, we continue through the countryside to see the beautiful temple of Banteay Srey. Also known as the “Citadel of the Women”, this remains one of the best preserved ancient buildings in Cambodia.

On the way back to Siem Reap, we will stop by one of the local communities (time permitting) where your guide will help you to interact with the local people to learn more about their way of life. We will view how rice paper is produced and taste Palm Wine and Palm Sugar, which are a popular local produce (seasonal).

In the late afternoon, we transfer back to Siem Reap where there will be free time for the rest of the day.

Here we will view the only surviving bridge from the Khmer Empire. Dating from 12th Century, it was once the largest stone arched bridge in the world. Also en route, we visit the busy market town of Skun. Known in the local language as “Spiderville”, it is famous with international visitors to Cambodia for its fried tarantulas. Sampling this local delicacy will  be purely optional!

Upon arrival in Phnom Penh, transfer to your hotel for check in. Following a lunch of Khmer food in a lovely colonial setting, we spend the rest of the afternoon browsing through the colourful markets of Phnom Penh. First we visit the Central Market, an Art Deco landmark and one of the largest markets in the city, before moving on to the Russian Market – which is the best place to find wood and stone carvings, jewellery, clothes and Cambodian silk souvenirs.

    Day 7: Phnom Penh (B, L, D)

After breakfast, we embark on a cyclo-rickshaw tour of the main sights this lively city has to offer.

First, head to the Royal Palace complex which also houses the Silver Pagoda, named for the more than 5000 heavy silver tiles that cover its floors. In this temple you will view a collection of Buddha statues in gold, silver, crystal, and bronze. From here we continue on to the National Museum, which houses the world’s foremost collection of ancient Khmer artistic, archaeological and religious artefacts from the 4th to the 13th centuries. Then we move on to Wat Phnom, considered the birthplace of the city.

After lunch in a local restaurant, we move on to explore the recent dark history of Cambodia at the Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide. The museum is housed in the former school that was taken over by the Khmer Rouge and used as its main detention and torture centre. From here we continue to Cheung Ek, the most notorious of the ‘Killing Fields’ which will provide you with an impression of the brutality of the regime.
